Project Name: Making a Wild Place in Milwaukee's Urban Menomonee Valley
Artist/Designer: Landscapes of Place, LLC - Nancy M. Aten, ASLA
Affiliation: Society for Ecological Restoration

In February 2011 Landscapes of Place, LLC delivered the landscape
restoration plan for a key 25 acres within the urban Menomonee Valley in Milwaukee. This effort was for a client partnership including city, state, and non-profits. The plan was developed over two years and guided by the framework of the Society for Ecological Restoration. It describes 100-year target habitats for a mosaic of conditions within dramatic topography adjacent to the Menomonee River. The project may be unusual -- in its highly urban context -- for its emphasis on unbroken space, microtopographic variability, and use of local reference models for “creating wildness” in reclaimed former brownfields.

The 160:1 scale model was used primarily by our team during the
restoration design process, but also as a kind of performance piece with stakeholders (starting from the mostly bare ground of the current site, and showing the development of landscape over time), and to gather stakeholder and community perceptions and reactions.
